EMT - Emergency Medical Technician

The EMT-Basic course is 130 hours in length and meets both the National Department of Transportation standard and the Maine EMS standard.  This course is designed to prepare the student to become a Maine Licensed EMT-Basic and therefore eligible to seek employment with or volunteer for an EMS service (ambulance service) in Maine.

Successful completion of the course qualifies the student to take the Maine EMS licensing exam and become a Nationally Registered EMT-Basic.  There are no prerequisites for the course, but CPR certification is encouraged prior to enrollment in the course.  As required by the functional job description, all candidates must be able to read and write English and a 30 question adult basic literacy test is required for all candidates.  The course work and textbook are at a 10th grade reading level.  Those candidates under 18 years of age must have special permission to attend this course.

Licensure is good for three years from the successful completion date and renewable by taking a 24 hour refresher course every third year or maintaining continuing education hours.
